mission:destroy questionaire: THE GOSSIP!
*Over the years it seems like Riot Grrrl has sort of grown up and started to expand horizons, looking at themselves as people, rather than just females, and leaving Riot Grrrl to purely a thing of the past. And it definitely seems those who are left are just a bunch of quick-witted hipsters who talk endlessly about their Hello Kitty dildo to no end like it was really something profound, even though that sort of girl culture should have been there anyway, just like Superman or football has been for "boys". Do you think riot grrrl still has anything real to offer or that it's just something that did a few good things for women-to-be, like a worthwhile stepping stone that was mandatory then, but not very interesting as far as women in punk rock are concerned now?
Nathan: Riot Grrl was definitely a cool & important movement and I’m sure it still could change lives.
Beth: First of all, there is no comparing Riot Grrl and football. All these grown up riot grrrls are still riot grrrls at heart and probably always will be. They may not call it riot grrl now, but the attitude hasn't changed. Football got Nathan beat up in high school… riot grrrl saved so many people. It's more than Hello Kitty dildos… that's bull shit. Riot grrrl, the fashion, may be over but the attitude, belief, and feeling is all still there. YES, fuck yes, Riot Grrl can still offer people, especially young girls and boys in shitty ass towns, a lot. I don't know if that answers your question...
*What bands/people/whatever have been a major influence on the band?
Nathan: Bruce Willis, Alf (the sitcom character), and the music of Bobby McFerrin.
Beth: Ummmm... Janis Joplin, Aretha, Gladys Knight, that stuff.
*It's hard to not notice the "no thanks to those who don't dance" on the inserts, because it's a problem: a lot of kids don't dance and it's really obnoxious. Why do you think people don't dance really? I've always found it really annoying and life sucking to what a show is supposed to be: fun. And person next to them is doing, standing there, like they don't want to draw attention to themselves. Props up to the dancing encouragement: why is it important to y’all?
Nathan: Let it be known that I do not speak for The Gossip as a whole, but I believe that shows should be a much more entertaining experience than they are now. Kids need to loosen up and fuck shit up. Youth must dance and heckle bands to thrive!! This is no modern idea but it must be inducted into modern underground.
Beth & Kathy: I think that a lot of kids are super afraid of what others think of them. It's totally understandable knowing that in almost every scene there's a lot of drama and shit talking and pretentious kids who think they are sooooo cool and keep other kids down... those kids are no different from cheerleaders and jocks and rich asshole kids in high school that made it totally fucking miserable in your teen years.....
*What was going on tour with Sleater-Kinney like? What was going on tour like in general? And where did you tour, for how long and stuff?
Nathan: Going on tour is fun although we all miss our significant others. Sleater-Kinney are nice ladies and Janet is a wild machine…
Beth & Kathy: Tour with Sleater-Kinney was great... FUN AND GREAT. They're awesome kids. We went all over the U.S.
*Olympia seems like it's a town full of scene queens and happenings and punk rock madness. Is it actually anything like that, maybe explosively or just a tiny bit? Do you think people overrate the place because it's full of indie rock stars and such? What's the big deal about Olympia (or have I just been listening to too much crap from other naive idiots)?
Nathan: Olympia is small and there is one Value Village and one Goodwill there.
Beth & Kathy: You really have been listening to ALOT of crap. There are idiots everywhere you go. There are boring people everywhere, that's the way it is. The nicest people are there; you have to get to know them.
*What are your opinions on popular and underground music as of now, if you have an opinion?
Nathan: As for popular music, hip hop is the only genre of music that could get better as time passes on. Rock and roll has already hit its prime and modern rock and roll sucks. Modern hip hop has amazing beats and it’s a genre of music that is definitely just gonna get better. As for underground music, my favorite underground bands right now are Glass Candy, Erase Errata, and Arab On Radar. There are a few others, too.
Beth and Kathy: I like some stuff, I don't like some stuff...
*How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Tootsie Pop?
Nathan:20000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000090909090909090909090909090909090909090909090909090909090909095095430594509450897859875875843758573498574398574895743895475475894574895437854785947859475894754578457489543754752758578495743895437895437584357894574895749574385743895437854378 LICKS.
Beth & Kathy: Owwwwwwwwww......Owwwwwwwwww!
